Can Best Buy Canada Set You Up for Back to School with a $250 Gift Card?

Getting Back-to-School Set With Best Buy Canada & #SetMeUpBBY!

Summer’s over — time to go back to school!

“Back to school” is a strange concept for me as it’s been about a decade since I was last a full-time student. Having worked all the time since, I barely recognize the summer vacation months when they come along, noting only that it’s a little hotter and all the fun stuff in town’s a lot busier than it was a few months prior.

Which is all fine and dandy — until you have a kid.

Because Back-to-School is Different as a Parent.

I woke up early on the Tuesday following Labour Day, getting my Facebooking in before the toils and tribulations of the day ahead. I’ve spent 9 years seeing my Facebook evolve from club kids without a clue to travel, weddings and baby announcements, but this morning my Facebook feed was plastered with kids getting ready for the first day of school. My little guy’s only creeping on 10 months old, and I already find myself thinking of all the things I’ll need to keep in mind when he’s in preschool. Then in elementary school. And later in high school.

It’s 2014 and school’s more confusing than ever — you need indoor shoes; outdoor shoes; labelled containers for lunches, snacks and afternoon snacks; permission forms signed in triplicate; and clean DNA samples should anything go wrong1! Parenting’s way different now than it was when my parents were sending me to school — there’s quite literally an app for everything: want to get your little toddler ready for their first day? Try Hurray for PreK! Need a little help getting your lives in order in this new phase of life? Cozi Family OrganizerRemember the Milk and Awesome Note are all excellent choices. You can teach them about time with KinderClock; build healthy dining habits with LunchBagFood on the Table and Big Oven — there’s even Is it Contagious? when you have no clue whether your kid should be around other kids!

The Palmer Boys When They Were Young

The world has definitely changed, and transitioning from having a little person hanging around at home relying on you for everything to one ready to go out into the world and live a life without you involved is a tough one — and an expensive one, too!

Which is why stores like Best Buy are there to help out, with a bevy of diverse services like a Lowest Price Guarantee, Reverse and Pick-up service and Web Kiosks that can help ship an item to your home in the unlikely event that they don’t have what you’re looking for in-store!

And if you thought Best Buy was just a technology store, think again — with more than 300 backpacks, 3,500 school and office supplies, educational toys and even musical instruments, Best Buy could very well be your one-stop shop for just about anything your child might need! That toddler just entering daycare? Check. That kid tearing it up on the elementary school playground? Check. That teenager learning the ways of the world in high school? Obviously.

In fact, with the parental leave in Casa de Palmer coming to a close and the Daycare Days soon upon us, Best Buy Canada gave us the chance to try some products that fit the stage the little guy’s at, maybe even giving him a leg up he needs for a glorious future ahead!

1 Okay, schools don’t really ask for your children’s DNA samples for emergencies. Not yet, anyway.

Little Things for the Preschool Kids!

BTS Backpack Campaign — Preschool

Munchkin Funpack Harness ($14.99)

Best Buy Canada — #SetMeUpBBY — Munchkin Funpack Harness

I know there’re parents who are totally against using a harness to rein their kids in, but as a first-time parent, I’m extra-wary of the world’s dangers, and rather have as many emergency measures as possible to keep my child out of harm’s way.

The Funpack’s a fun little pack that can help carry a water bottle and some cleaning supplies, but as he explores his world, it’s good knowing that we can lend a helping — if a little unsolicited — hand when needed!

LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus ($24.99)

Best Buy Canada — #SetMeUpBBY — LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus

Things have come a long way since the borderline-creepy voice of the Speak ‘n’ Spell back in the ’80s!

Though a quiet kid, I was reading from a young age, and I want to be involved in my son’s journey to learn a love for reading as well! So the LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus was a great educational toy to get in the mail, with three modes to help him build his vocabulary, explore the alphabet, and even get in touch with his musical side as an added bonus!

(Just like his Dad!)

Normally, we let the batteries run out on his noise-making toys, but this is one worth buying extras for!

Munchkin 8 oz Cookie Monster Straw Cup ($6.99) & WOW Kids Spill Free Drinking Cup ($9.08)

Kids like to drink. As the Dad of a breastfed child, there was only so much I could do to quench his thirst in the early months, even at the times where we introduced the bottle. But now we’ve started introducing different liquids, and the little guy can’t get enough!

But boy does he ever make a mess!

Which is why an option like the WOW Kids Spill-Free Cup is so appealing — he still learns to drink from a sippy cup on his own, while we don’t need to worry from afar that he’s making himself a hot mess without us there to change him.

Total win-win!

Home Presence Fuel Bento Lunch Box Food Container ($16.99)

Best Buy Canada — #SetMeUpBBY — Home Presence fuel Bento Lunch Box Food Container

We’re years away yet from labelled containers at lunchtime, but the Home Presence Fuel Bento Lunch Box is great for kids (or even grateful husbands) to keep all those foods separate, clear of the cross-contamination that make things mushy, soggy or anything else that’s rather unappetizing!

I think… I’ll hold on to this one for a while.

Here’s Your Reward for Making it This Far in the Post!

From now ’til September 19, 2014, you can enter to win a $250 Best Buy Mobile gift card, good for a new device, mobile accessories, or any of the other things children might need to adjust to the world around them — well, the things not meant to end up in their tummies, anyway! Enter early, enter often, and you could find yourself $250 richer in a couple weeks’ time!

So if you’re stressed and feeling underprepared for the school year, don’t worry! There’re stores, apps and a whole bunch of resources that’ll make this journey an easier one to face!

Good luck with the contest, with the school daze, and may the odds ever be in your favour,

  1. Wow we need so many things Best buy could hook us up for sure. we could use backpacks and my son would so love to have a tablet of some kind , that would be great

  2. Well, how could they not? They have everything – laptops, desktops, printers tablets – and a tablet would definitely hook me up!

  3. We would put it towards new head phones for both kids for school, my son just cracked an ear off his and my daughter is always breaking lunch containers so we are always looking for newer better ones.

  4. You may not end up using the harness, but I sure understand the thought behind getting it. Honestly, my kid would have needed it more at 5, when she realized she knew *everything*, than when she was a toddler and still thought Mom and Dad knew best! This gift card would probably go towards a tablet, now that she’s in Grade Two she’s wanting to do research online about things she learns at school and a tablet would be a handy way for us to do that together.

  5. Our TV packed it in and we need an ipad mini for school so the TV has to wait! Either of these, wvwn a laptop woud be amazing!

  6. You know, I totally forgot that we bought my hubby a guitar from Best Buy until I read this post! I love shopping online at BB, and I think I can shop through ebates and get some money back too.

    Great giveaway, good luck!

  7. Those are great ideas! I usually think of Best Buy as a computer store (that’s where I found my computer) so it’s good to know they’ve got back-to-school covered too. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

      1. Good question! A few people I know have FitBits whereas I don’t know anyone with Jawbones. To be honest though, they aren’t raving about the usefulness of the FitBit. If I was really going to make a purchase, I would splurge for a fitness watch with a GPS like the Garmin or Nike watches because I’m an avid runner. What about you — why are you considering the FitBit?

  8. Best Buy cold hook me up with some new headphones to give to my teen son. He lost his noise cancelling set. Now he’s using a little set of earbuds we had laying around and I can hear every single note of the music he listens to while he studies.

  9. I totally follow your logic on the harness. It’s a 100% certain way to keep a child within reasonable distance. It’s a crazy world out there.

As for preparing for school, I could definitely use a bluetooth keyboard iPad case!

  10. I had clicked the rafflecopter entry that says rss feed as I subsribe by email bur you added the email entry so that rss one is not right as that link dosent work but I can edit it so I hope that is okay I would hate to get disqualified for that entry? thanks

    1. Stacey, I’ll make sure to keep it in mind 🙂 The link should work in an RSS reader, but I didn’t have anywhere to put the additional detail. When the contest comes to a close, I’ll have this comment as reference, so it should work 🙂

  11. I would love a new cell phone!!! BTS is a very busy time! I never really thought about it prekids, but now that I have 3 going to school, I understand the start in August thing and all the prep! THanks for the great apps and tech toys for back to school!

  12. Best Buy carries everything for back to school! Please hook me up with phones and tablets for my teens! needed asap 🙂

  13. I am commenting here because I am getting errors everywhere I go on your site! I love your blog and one day I would like to be a PTPA Blogaholic too! Any advice?? Thanks!!

    1. Thanks, Alayne — I think my site’s taking on more than it can handle, and I need to have a chat with my provider about the load so I can move to something more appropriate. Thanks for being patient with me. LOL.

I got into being a PTPA Blogaholic through meeting other parent bloggers at an event I was invited to in January (linked below). The biggest thing is to blog regularly, build a blog that lets you build rapport with others, and show that you have a different story to supply than others.

Everything else kind of stems from there!

Feel free to use my contact form if you ever want to chat further!

  14. My 5 yr old is in grade 1 this year. She actually needs headphones and a calculator for grade 1. I got her some, but inexpensive ones because they’re for school. I would like to get her better quality ones for home.

  15. I would like to have Best Buy hook up my son Luke with a Mac Book and an i-Pad and for fun the new X-box! Lol! Thank-you for this awesome giveaway!!

  16. I NEED a macbook pro. I have been eyeing them up for a long time (I love my iMac) and any help towards it financially would make a big difference. Let’s be honest, they’re not the cheapest products out there.

  17. They could help with either a new printer and paper for projects, with an eReader to read books, with Lego to inspire creativity, or anything from their Educational Electronics section.

  18. My personal needs are mild – my mouse is a noisy stubborn clicker. No one should have an index finger as well muscled as I do.
As for my little people…durable backpacks for the smaller two and the elder could use a home computer to work on her future career as a biologist/teacher/chemist/blogger/etc

  19. I had no idea Best Buy carried lunch gear and other non-techy stuff like that. Learned something new! I’d love to get hooked up with all the little things you don’t usually think about. Like that bento box, and a tablet sleeve (cause my kids are droppers!), some headphones, and up-to-date phone – stuff that just makes things a little easier in the daily routine. Thanks!

  20. I have grandkids in different age groups so I would love to get an iPad, a Leapfrog Touch Magic School Bus, headphones and just some fun stuff.

  21. BBY could hook me up with a new smartphone, one that has the ability to host a personal hotspot so I can use my tablet while on the bus home from work and get my course readings done during that hour of down time!

  22. This woud be soo awesome,,I desperately need a laptop,,or tablet,my son do as well,I would put it towards one of that, and he could use it for his schoolwork!

  23. Wow! they have so many cool things that I didn’t even knew tey carried! …I love smelly markers 😛 … I REALLY love those bento lunch kits 🙂

  24. Wowzers! Best Buy could hook me up with some decent bling, got 2 in school & hey school purchases are pricey enough. And for Mama Bear a great movie to watch!!!!! ♥♥♥

  25. My fella is heading back to school this month, and he could definitely use a new laptop or tablet for his classes!

Plus, with his nieces and nephews not being able to start school, due to the strike, I’m sure we could help them out with a tablet, to keep them learning.

  26. Oooh, I didn’t know Staples had bento lunch boxes. Love to get set up with a couple of those. 🙂 And a cell phone isn’t a bad idea either as I’m the primary contact + don’t have a cell. (never have. what???)

  27. I’m in need of a new laptop as the one I have is not very good – Best Buy can def. hook me up with a great one that’s reliable and runs great 🙂

        1. I mean, let’s be honest here — my ultimate goal would be to strap it to my kid’s head and take video from his perspective as he crawls around the house. I have nothing actually productive to do with it 😛

  28. Batteries, a quality laptop cooling fan, and all the accessories and cables we need but never think to buy because everyone is too busy picking out games and blu rays!

  29. With 5 kids (3 of them in school) I’m sure we could easily get hooked up with $250 from Best Buy. I still need to buy them each a set of headphones to use with the tablets at school. And I LOVE Wow sippy cups! I’d get a few of those to mix & match the colorful lids.
And my daughter needs a backpack since hers has seen better days.

  30. We would use the gift card to help get the kids an iPad to help with learning. Was gifted a great phonics app, and just need something to run it on.

  31. Best Buy could hook me up with a laptop or tablet that I could gift to my granddaughter in honour of her first year at university!

  32. considering our sons age the pre-k stuff you featured could be quite useful especially for learning letters and numbers, Mama wouldn’t mind some new headphones for quiet time either 😉

  33. The no. 1 thing I could use from Best Buy is new lap top. Mine is slowly and painfully dying and I need something more reliable that’s for sure.

  34. I would love to provide my kids a new laptop each. I have 3 kids and giving them each one would be expensive. We could also use a new wireless printer with a few refills of ink since Ink seems to be the biggest thing we go through here on a continuous basis.

  35. We homeschool, so we use a lot of electronics in our program. Best Buy could hook me up with a new computer, ours is very old and slow! That would help in my daughters Japanese Program that is all done via computer!

  36. On my 10 yr old son’s wishlist “Cell Phone” – time to pass on my cell phone – at this age all his friends have phones – not the selling factor. Truth, Mom just wants to keep track of my son and keep the communication lines open. BestBuy could assist us quite nicely….phone selection huge…

  37. Oh my goodness I could think of many things that are needed for back to school…Clothing and a v-tech and a first time cell phone come to the top of my head.

  38. I would love to get a laptop for my oldest and a leap pad computer for my littlest! This would definitely help with keeping us up on our technology in this family.

  39. I really need a new laptop for school. My current one is old, heavy and the keys are falling out. I also need new printer ink. It’s necessary for school, but costs so much money!

  40. I need a wireless printer for these reasons: 1. My current printer is out of ink 2. I’m too lazy to climb the stair to plug my laptop into my printer or vice versa 3. Do I really need another reason to need a wireless printer? 🙂

P.S. Thanks for hosting this giveaway 🙂

  41. WOW, $250 best buy gc is fab. & splendid. 2 fingers snap. . Pick me, pick me! Your next winner!!! Show me the money!!! It would be a dream come true & means more to me than anyone else to win. Starving artist here desperately needs the $250 gc to work & eat again. Winner, winnner. Chicken dinner. A life changing experience. Top of my bucket list. Thanks for the awesomeness, the contest, & generosity. Dear Santa: I have been nice. My X-Mas wish this year is to win this contest..

  42. The best two things Best Buy Canada could hook me up with for back to school would be a coffee maker (seriously how do I not have one and still survive the early mornings with my kids!?) and a keyboard attachment for my ipad.

  43. I would find a low priced compact laptop to be very useful. Honestly I would want something like a netbook if they were still made. Tablets seem to have replaced them but are more expensive and specialized.

  44. Best Buy can hook me uppppppp with all KINDS of goodies! I need a laptop bag real bad — back-to-school has this girl broke. There’s also all kinds of fun stuff I could use, like that bento box lunch thing! So sweet.

  45. I’m a high school teacher, so I desperately need an electronic projector and a scanner for my classroom! Thanks for helping out!
