I’M NOT DEAD, I’M JUST A DAD: Stankin’ Tuesday

Twilight at the Viamede Resort

What up, what up, y’all? It’s your boy Case P. here on a Stankin’ Tuesday, where I was so distracted this morning that I forgot to put deodorant on, but them’s the breaks.

Today I started a new job — in fact, the 9th job in the last 6 years. Now anywhere outside of government, this would show I sucked at holding a job down, always getting into trouble — or maybe I want very loyal, jumping ship at the first sign of trouble. But in the public sector, it’s all about growing through your opportunities. I was approached for this job due to the work and long hours I’d put in on some multi-million IT projects I’d done in the past, and when you can turn something that everyone had all but given up on into a success, it’s not soon forgotten. So I’ve been asked to come in to another situation, bat swinging as I try to make sense of a bunch of data and turn it into something we can actually use. Good thing I’m trying to get this out of the way before DoomzToo makes his grand début, yeah?

But I work to live, not live to work, so here’s some other stuff you should know right now:

  1. Promotional Image for Lee Daniels' The Butler
Lee Daniels’ The Butler is a solid movie. Not as mind-blowing as Fruitvale Station where I say shame, shameSHAME on you if you didn’t see it, but still good enough to get a brief glimpse of the history of Black struggle in America and how far the country had to travel to get itself a Black president. In fact, watching that movie inspired me enough to revisit my roots and reach out to my family members on Facebook so we could look at fleshing out our family tree, and got me thinking about doing some research on the Torontonian Black experience, and what the struggle was like for my parents and their parents, who made their way up here from the Caribbean — but I’ll look at that later.
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses Official Logo
Paige and I chatted about her plan to play the classic The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time for the first time ever spurred a discussion about how annoying the Water Temple is in that game (but also how utterly bad-ass Shadow Link is  in that dungeon!) On that note, I recently got wind that The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses has a Second Quest going down on September 7th if you die-hard gamers feel like checking it out. I haven’t checked on tickets or anything, but from recordings I’ve heard before, they do a damn good job, so I’d give it a look if your weekend’s free!
  3. Social Media Week Logo
If you’re not in the loop on where photography’s taken me, you need to know that I’m hosting a photography panel as part of a Social Media Week Toronto panel called PhotoWOW: Why You Need to Use the Right Images Right NOW! Attendance is free and the experience will be way better than your standard photography seminar that usually teaches the basics of using your camera, so I expect to see you there!
  4. This baby ain’t no joke! If you didn’t know who really wears the pants in this relationship, while Sarah gave me August off as a month of rest, August ain’t here no more, and it’s time to clean up for DoomzToo! This month has me cleaning out the office to make way for a nursery, getting ready for pre-natal classes (to get us ready) — we’re even getting rid of  all the hard liquor that’s just taking up space! (By the way — if anyone out there’s looking for a bunch of liquor needing a good home and you’re of age, drop me a line.) We’re in the third trimester, and all this parenthood preparation is getting very real very quickly!
  5. UDON's Vent: Volume 1 cover
Finally, while up at the Viamede Resort over the long weekend (blog post pending), I buried my nose is UDON’s Vent: Volume 1 to bone up on my digital painting. That’s right, baby — I’m hoping to get back to making drawing part of my everyday life, and like anything else, learning how to do something for a second time still requires baby steps. Wish me luck!

All things considered, life’s going in a good direction. And I’m going to end this Stankin’ Tuesday with a shower, some ironing, and putting my deodorant in plain sight, because tomorrow’s another day!

Stay fresh,

–case p.

  1. Congrats on the new gig Kazzle! (Just trying out the name to see if it sticks.) Seriously though, well done Casey!

I really want to see the Butler. My Dad went to see it and said it was good!

    1. It’s good 🙂 Lots of great acting by many big names — it just didn’t have the emotional connection that I’d felt from Fruitvale Station, or The Shawshank Redemption, or Antwone Fisher, to name a few. I look forward to Mandela — it looks AMAZING and Idris Elba ain’t no joke!

As for Kazzle, well… we’ll work on that, Samoan 🙂

    1. HA! Thanks, Christine — to be honest, one of the posts I have in the hopper is seriously just a list of all the stuff I have planned to do. I’m fairly certain I’m well on the path to being certifiably insane, but let’s keep that one between you and me 😉

    1. It was literally my first day at a new office and I hadn’t established my stock of toiletries yet! SITUATION RECTIFIED FOR ALL FUTURE OCCURRENCES, THANK YOU.

And yeah, totally wish I could’ve gone, but alas =/

    1. Unfortunately, I’ll be moving it from a full room to a desk in the corner of the dining room. Eventually, when we no longer have tenants in the basement, I can take one of the rooms over down there, but I’ll just have to be patient 🙂
