The 2K11 24/7 CCXLIV: Skillz

We are not created equal. I think this is something we can all readily appreciate and agree to. We are not RAISED equal. Again, we inherently know this — we all have different parents, and for better or worse, whether they were absent or present, we all had experiences growing up that are very much unique.

But what we often do NOT consider is the product of these two facts. We all are of different physical makeup — for example, we know that no two people have the same set of fingerprints. Our DNA is unique. And our skills — which directly correlate to how we’re created and how we’re raised — make all the difference when it comes down to how our lives play out.

Two-thirds of the way through the year and how much farther have we come?

You all know it’s been a crazy year form me. Getting married, changing jobs, writing blogs and trying earnestly to keep a social life in the midst of all this. But I’m living proof of the fact that we suck as a species when it comes to taking our own advice. Keep too busy, and things start falling to the wayside and getting… forgotten.

Back at the beginning of the year, the plans were different. Raw. Lacking direction. So I was looking for ways to upgrade my skills — one of which was my skills in web design and development. With Kevin’s help, I amassed a wealth of reading material from Sitepoint’s Advent sales and signed up for some courses. Cheap courses, but ones paid for in full nonetheless. Paid for and promptly forgotten.

So — with them expiring at the year’s end — it’s a mad dash to learn new coding skills, sewing, studio photography and everything to do with a new job before the year comes to a close.

This was not well-planned out.

So please learn from me. Skills are important — they help us improve and open new doors for us in life. But would you rather know a lot about a little or a little about a lot? A Jack-of-all-trades yet a master of none? We can all only be good at so many things — let’s not burn outselves out trying to make it TOO many!

  1. lol … the problem is that we didn’t go in with a plan. I finally got myself to drafting a better upgrading system that inspires me to keep to a good amount of books and skills that will coincide with. I’m pretty satisfied with it so far and will build on it as the months continue. There will be monitoring.

  2. @Mary: You too 🙂 I think I was actually under a false assumption that they expired at the year’s end and I should be able to use them well into 2012, which is good since I have SO MANY things I’m trying to do.

@Kevin: I think that’s the BEST part, that we didn’t go in with a plan, and now we’re just trying to take what we’ve learned so far and make something of it. Neither of us has given up, and I’m sure that there’s plenty more to come!
