The 2K11 24/7 CLXXXVIII: Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

Every day, we make mistakes. Lots and lots and lots of mistakes. Sleeping in. Taking the wrong train. Saying the wrong thing. Coming to the wrong conclusion. There’s lots of actions we take daily, each one of them weighing upon the direction that our lives will take. We do things to test our limits. We do things to see what we can actually get away with.
But just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean that you SHOULD.
It is said that we make mistakes so that we can learn from them. While this rings of bitter truth, there’s an extension of this as well – we can learn from the mistakes of others, as well. It’s something to take into serious consideration – we often lead ourselves to believe “No, it couldn’t happen to me” – but life is an unpredictable thing. Not to make anyone paranoid, but we never know what the future will have in store for us. That’s why it’s important to live well TODAY.
Last night, at ultimate frisbee, I realized how out of shape I’d become without playing sports for months on end. And I’m sure that if I were to keep my behaviour up, things wouldn’t get any better. So although I love going out and gorging on all sorts of stuff with friends – pizza, poutine, beer and burgers galore – I need to make sure I watch myself. The good ol’ check yourself before you wreck yourself!

You can look around and see many of the people who haven’t taken care of themselves and aren’t doing so well in the later years of their lives. You obviously can’t avoid everything the world throws at you, but a healthier lifestyle is good preventative medicine. We often don’t treat our symptoms until well after they’ve taken hold of us – if we bolstered our bodies with what they needed in the first place, we’d stand a way better chance at making it through intact.
So again, just because you can doesn’t mean you should – and if you would regardless, you’ll find yourself saying one thing and one thing only down the road when you look back at your life – coulda, shoulda, woulda.
