2024 Summer Camps in the Toronto Area: A Parents’ Guide!

One of the Palmer boys scaling a tree as part of summer camp!

Last updated on January 31st, 2024 at 12:43 am

When I was working on the initial manuscript for Black Dad Matters: Because We’re More Than Just the Headlines, it helped me realise just how different my children’s lives are from mine, thanks to the help of intergenerational growth. When my parents raised us in the ’80s and ’90s, their restaurateur and data entry clerk jobs didn’t allow much family time. We took trips where we could and spent most of our summers in our neighbourhood or at our grandma’s while our parents were at work until we were old enough to start adventuring on our own and building our lives.

But my kids travel more each summer than I did my entire childhood. Whether they’re old enough to appreciate the number of opportunities and experiences afforded to them, I’m at least happy that I’m in a position to give it to them. That said, it means they’re privy to several experiences I’m unfamiliar with, including summer camp.

How I suddenly got interested in summer camps

2024 Summer Camps in the Toronto Area — A Camp Counsellor Reading to Kids
Summer camps come in all shapes and sizes — find the right kind for your kids!

Every summer till now, taking care of the kids was much easier—we’d take them out camping and explore North America as the budget would allow, but when we were home, we always had their after-school care to rely on, which ran programs for March Break, summer break, and every PA Day. But as the kids grew older, they outgrew what the program offered them. They wanted to pursue options that aligned more with them as people instead of just their age, and the multitude of summer camps out there could provide that.

This is Toronto, though, where kids’ programming never comes easy. Parents battle each other at 7 in the morning for spots in city-run activities or pay out the nose for private ones instead. And with summer camp, we start booking it at the beginning of the year because there are only so many spots for the nearly 400,000 children in this city.

Why make a guide for summer camps, anyway?

When Buzz Bishop told me about the summer camp guides he put together several years back, I didn’t understand the value in it then, but as we try to find the right camps at the right price for the right dates that’ll match with our kids’ personalities, let me tell you… I’m figuring it all out now. With a bit of coding magic, I took a first pass at what a guide to Toronto’s summer camps could look like with some filtering and sortability involved. I’d love to give it even more functionality in the future, like the ability to filter by age or cost or get more details like camp sizes and dates.

If anything, I’m hoping that, at the very least, I give parents in the Toronto area an excellent place to start their search, with links to nearly 160 different summer camps to choose from. It’s a long way from vetted, so if you’re looking for any corrections or additions, reach out, and we’ll make it happen!
