Best Buy Smart Home

National Home Show 2017

Last updated on April 20th, 2021 at 09:39 pm

Part of me wants to think I was the perfect kid, never causing trouble for my parents… but my childhood home would likely disagree. I routinely fell asleep with the light on. I burned TVs out holding my place in the video games I kept on all night. Yes, I kicked holes in walls and jammed garage doors through idiocy—the fact that the house is in great condition today is a miracle unto itself!

But the ’90s it is not. We’ve come a long way since towering home entertainment systems with dedicated real estate to handle their bulk. TVs are slimmer, computers are lighter, and our phones are remotes for the whole shebang.

Though my childhood had wired peripherals and cords galore, the same doesn’t have to go for my boys, and I’m glad—I don’t think this house could outlast them otherwise!

What we really needed was a home far smarter than ourselves, and I knew just the people to help—none other than Canada’s go-to retailer with the best selection of the latest tech at the best prices.

It was time to say what’s up to Best Buy!

And it just so happened they had a Smart Home showcase at 2017’s National Home Show!

The Best Buy Home Show and the National Home Show—A Match Made in Homeowner’s Heaven!

Found right near the Enercare Centre’s B Entrance over at Exhibition Place, the Best Buy Smart Home—again designed by the talented Christine Dovey—easily dwarfed the size of her He-Shed from November.

ASIDE: What IS the National Home Show???

Glad you asked!

For those not in the know (or for those of you who aren’t homeowners

—I hear that’s going around these days), the National Home Show is:

“the largest North American display of innovative products, new ideas & great deals for all things home & garden with over 700 retailers & industry experts.”

So whether you live in an overpriced Toronto bungalow or own acres in rural Ontario, this show’s got the goods for you!

And with that, back to our regular story!

The Best Buy Smart Home—What’s In It?

The Best Buy Smart Home was a multi-room setup with a dine-in kitchen, living room, playroom and bedroom filled with smart technologies, plus a room designed to change the way you think about your home setup… but we’ll get to that.

A smart home’s all about creating a space that conforms to one’s lifestyle, and that means tailoring details for every moment you spend at home. There were dozens of products in the Best Buy Smart Home with that exact purpose in mind, but what’s the good in knowing about the products if no one shows you how they could be used in your life?

So let’s do exactly that—friends, Romans, countrymen… please enjoy “A Day in the Life of a Smart Home Owner!”

A Day in the Life of a Smart Home Owner

The way you wake up usually sets the tone for the rest of your day, and many of us keep doing the worst way possible—jolting awake to an annoying alarm clock. But that rarely feels refreshing—it’s usually just a pain in the rear!

With a smart home, you could program your blinds to slowly open so you wake naturally as the room gets brighter. You could bathe the room in subtle blue hues from your Philips Hue to kickstart your mood—these little tweaks can make all the difference!

Checking out the Best Buy Smart Home at the National Home Show!—BOSCH Coffee Maker

And if you’re a java junkie, this next part will blow your mind—Bosch came up with a way to make coffee from your bed! Yeah, you heard me—with their 800 Series appliances you can do all sorts of things! Set your oven to suit your dish. Thaw food out on a warming rack. Wash 5 dress shirts in as quick as 15 minutes! And yes—you can make an espresso, cappuccino or latte macchiato from under your covers with their Bosch Barista technology!

But Bosch wasn’t there to just show off their wares—their setup in the Best Buy Smart Home reimagined how we use our space, putting the kitchenware in the same area as the washer/dryer. It doesn’t jive with how we typically think of laying out these appliances, but it was aesthetically sound and raised the question—”Why not?” In a world where space is at a premium, perhaps it is time to rethink our approach!

That’s enough waxing poetic on my future smart home, though—let me tell you about the rest of the house!

How to Make the Most of a Smart Home

Checking out the Best Buy Smart Home at the National Home Show! Welcome to the kitchen!

So you’ve gotten ready for work and your hot cuppa’s waiting for you in the kitchen… but what’ll you pack for lunch? Well, why think about it when your fridge can tell you what’s in it and how you can use it? The Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub ($6,999.99) includes touchscreen controls that let you see what’s in there without wasting energy and surf the ‘Net to find a good recipe to work with. And if you’re cooking breakfast on your Samsung 30” Electric Range with Flex Duo™ and Wi-Fi ($2499.99) while you’re at it, no need to worry—you can keep an eye on things with its built-in app… even shut it off remotely if it happened to slip your mind!

And that’s just the morning—imagine the security of knowing who’s approaching your home with the RING video doorbell! Or being entertained by a Samsung TV? This smart home featured smart toys for your all-too-smart kids; Nest technology to protect and monitor your home—or what was by far my favourite tech in the house, a Meural Canvas on the wall so you can make a home as unique as you are.
