Life changes ever so quickly, and it’s tough to keep track of everything going on. Today I started a new opportunity with a boss who I’ve grown accustomed to over time and who’s expressed an interest in the body of work I’ve developed over the last few years. I had to give up the assuredness I had in the past from two years of knowing my trade and some of the best coworkers I’ve ever worked with—but I’m looking to the future, figuring out the next steps and planning what I need to do to keep moving forward.

Everything happens for a REASON.

Sometimes you don’t even know that it’s time to move on from something you’re doing. I was in a role for a couple of years, getting to the point where I’d learned a lot of things about many of the initiatives our group helped our clients with when unexpectedly, I won the competition for a new role. It shocks me to this day, and it definitely changed my perspective on the future, but sometimes these happy accidents happen.

So I find myself in a brave new world with a few people I know and a daunting task at hand. Am I up for the challenge? Sure! I know it’ll be a tough road, but I was hired for a reason—it’s time to make good on those expectations.

But no matter where you get to in life, you need to remember Rule #1: NEVER FORGET WHERE YOU CAME FROM. For a long time, my former colleagues were like a second family to me. We’d eat lunch together, gripe together, protect each other from those who would see us fail. You don’t get anywhere if you run as a solo unit—it’s only through the combined efforts with people you respect and trust that you propel forward in life. Too often do people simply use others as stepping stones to get places in life without realizing that by doing so, you often lose more than you gain.

So thank you, Paul. Thank you, Dianna, Carny, Ilan, Helen, Agnes, Claire, Richard, Aaron, Tim, Ed, Basel, Chris, Rowena, David, Darren, Carol and Onil (and anyone I missed, though I think I was thorough). Without you, I wouldn’t have made it here, and I know that we’ll all get where we need to be.

DON’T FORGET WHERE YOU CAME FROM.

For if you forget that, did your journey to get where you really matter at all?
