GIVEAWAY: Checking out the Best Buy Smart Home at the National Home Show!

Part of me wants to think I was the perfect kid, never causing trouble for my parents… but my childhood home would likely disagree. I routinely fell asleep with the light on. I burned TVs out holding my place in the video games I kept on all night. Yes, I kicked holes in walls and jammed garage doors through idiocy—the fact that the house is in great condition today is a miracle unto itself!

But the ’90s it is not. We’ve come a long way since towering home entertainment systems with dedicated real estate to handle their bulk. TVs are slimmer, computers are lighter, and our phones are remotes for the whole shebang.

Though my childhood had wired peripherals and cords galore, the same doesn’t have to go for my boys, and I’m glad—I don’t think this house could outlast them otherwise!

What we really needed was a home far smarter than ourselves, and I knew just the people to help—none other than Canada’s go-to retailer with the best selection of the latest tech at the best prices.

It was time to say what’s up to Best Buy!

And it just so happened they had a Smart Home showcase at 2017’s National Home Show!

The Best Buy Home Show and the National Home Show — A Match Made in Homeowner’s Heaven!

Found right near the Enercare Centre’s B Entrance over at Exhibition Place, the Best Buy Smart Home—again designed by the talented Christine Dovey—easily dwarfed the size of her He-Shed from November.

ASIDE: What IS the National Home Show???

Glad you asked!

For those not in the know (or for those of you who aren’t homeowners—I hear that’s going around these days), the National Home Show is “the largest North American display of innovative products, new ideas & great deals for all things home & garden with over 700 retailers & industry experts.” [Source] So whether you live in an overpriced Toronto bungalow or own acres in rural Ontario, this show’s got the goods for you!

And with that, back to our regular story!

The Best Buy Smart Home — What’s In It?

The Best Buy Smart Home was a multi-room setup with a dine-in kitchen, living room, playroom and bedroom filled with smart technologies, plus a room designed to change the way you think about your home setup… but we’ll get to that.

A smart home’s all about creating a space that conforms to one’s lifestyle, and that means tailoring details for every moment you spend at home. There were dozens of products in the Best Buy Smart Home with that exact purpose in mind, but what’s the good in knowing about the products if no one shows you how they could be used in your life?

So let’s do exactly that—friends, Romans, countrymen… please enjoy “A Day in the Life of a Smart Home Owner!”

A Day in the Life of a Smart Home Owner

The way you wake up usually sets the tone for the rest of your day, and many of us keep doing the worst way possible—jolting awake to an annoying alarm clock. But that rarely feels refreshing—it’s usually just a pain in the rear!

With a smart home, you could program your blinds to slowly open so you wake naturally as the room gets brighter. You could bathe the room in subtle blue hues from your Philips Hue to kickstart your mood—these little tweaks can make all the difference!

And if you’re a java junkie, this next part will blow your mind—Bosch came up with a way to make coffee from your bed! Yeah, you heard me—with their 800 Series appliances you can do all sorts of things! Set your oven to suit your dish. Thaw food out on a warming rack. Wash 5 dress shirts in as quick as 15 minutes! And yes—you can make an espresso, cappuccino or latte macchiato from under your covers with their Bosch Barista technology!

But Bosch wasn’t there to just show off their wares—their setup in the Best Buy Smart Home reimagined how we use our space, putting the kitchenware in the same area as the washer/dryer. It doesn’t jive with how we typically think of laying out these appliances, but it was aesthetically sound and raised the question—”Why not?” In a world where space is at a premium, perhaps it is time to rethink our approach!

That’s enough waxing poetic on my future smart home, though—let me tell you about the rest of the house!

How to Make the Most of a Smart Home

So you’ve gotten ready for work and your hot cuppa’s waiting for you in the kitchen… but what’ll you pack for lunch? Well, why think about it when your fridge can tell you what’s in it and how you can use it? The Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub ($6,999.99) includes touchscreen controls that let you see what’s in there without wasting energy and surf the ‘Net to find a good recipe to work with. And if you’re cooking breakfast on your Samsung 30” Electric Range with Flex Duo™ and Wi-Fi ($2499.99) while you’re at it, no need to worry—you can keep an eye on things with its built-in app… even shut it off remotely if it happened to slip your mind!

And that’s just the morning—imagine the security of knowing who’s approaching your home with the RING video doorbell! Or being entertained by a Samsung TV? This smart home featured smart toys for your all-too-smart kids; Nest technology to protect and monitor your home—or what was by far my favourite tech in the house, a Meural Canvas on the wall so you can make a home as unique as you are.

There’s so much packed into the Best Buy Smart Home, and if you wanna see it for yourself you’d better hurry—the National Home Show’s only on ’til the 19th. If you’re looking for inspiration to make your current home your forever home, it’s definitely the place to be!

I’d love to get a Nest thermostat for our home. I think we could handle that technology and maybe save some money in the process. Thanks for the contest.

The Ring Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Pro sounds awesome! Not only am I able to view my pizza delivery guy in 1080p but I can talk to my FedEx Lady and even spot that sneaky racoon in infrared LED night vision! Thanks for the sweet giveaway CaseP!

In my dream kitchen I would love the Samsung Family Hub Fridge. That would be nice. Now sure if I could get used to having my washer/dryer in my kitchen – that would be different.

The idea of having the blinds open gradually to let in the sunlight sounds so wonderful! I will invest in this technology one day!

That “Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub” looks awesome. Sigh. Time to start saving up!

I love to have the RING video doorbell, I’d love to know who’s at the door before climbing the stairs and actually opening the door. 🙂

I’d love the Nest, and I thought the smart range and range hood were pretty neat when I saw them at the show!

I think the Nest thermostat would be great, any way to help cut back on hydro used would be very helpful these days.

I’d really like something like the Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub because I’m constantly opening my fridge for no good reason.

I really like the Idea of controlled blinds and the smooth lighting to help you fall asleep or wake up naturally without the harsh light blinding you right away.

I could use a smart fridge like the Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub! I have a bad memory and am horrible with grocery lists so being able to see what is inside my fridge on my phone while I’m at the store would help save me a lot of wasted grocery!

I would really love to have the Ring Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Pro! I would feel safer and it’s just nice to see what’s going on outside, too. Also, a great way to know who’s at the door before the pushy sales people come around!

I would love to have a thermostat the I can control and program. Also if I can access it remotely that would be great!

I just love the Samsung 30” Electric Range with Flex Duo™ and Wi-Fi . It would be the perfect addition to my kitchen. This would definately make my home smarter.!!

I would love that Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub but at that price it’s way out of reach for me.

Our home could definitely use a smart doorbell. I especially love the RING video doorbell because I read that it also has amazing security features like motion detection and night vision, giving you a peace of mind of who and/or what is going on at your door even when you’re not home.

I would want the 800 Series appliances so I could set the oven to turn on or Thaw food out on a warming rack.

Nest Learning Thermostat — it’d be good to adjust the heat based on when I actually need it, without lifting a finger.

The Samsung name is a trusted one in my house! And the Family Hub fridge is simply incredible.. it IS the future.. like something from The Jetsons! It would make our kitchen the “family hub” of our home. It even streams music! Love it!

The Nest Thermostat. We burn wood, but when we go away we leave electric heat on for the cats, and it would be awesome to be able to control it from away so that our neighbour can just worry about the cats 🙂

The Ring Wi-Fi Video Doorbell Pro would be a must-have to make my home a bit more intelligent. The motion sensor in it is a cool feature. This gadget would be handy for safety in my neighbourhood.

I would love to control the lights from app inside the house that I can access from abroad using my phone, a doorbell that I can see who’s on the door li love the ring doorbell system. Oh everything is hightech I hope I am able to start a bit of this by giving me a chand to win

I would get the RING video doorbell, Nest Cam and Nest Thermostat. I like the idea of seeing who is ringing the doorbell

Samsung 36” 27.9 Cu Ft 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Family Hub would be sooooo much better than my antique inefficient one I’m using.
