Keeping Your Job Close and Your Happiness Closer

When we are young our minds and hearts are full of possibility. When we get older the world comes into sharper focus. Outside sources start to hem in our choices. The one thing that can’t ever be closed off or driven away is your happiness. I know some people who have married both their job and their happiness together. And others who have to keep them separate in order to live through one and keep the other safe.

I happened to be talented in art, discovered quite a passion for it when I was younger. Creating things for myself and for others brought pride to me and joy to others. I graduated with twelve credits in art from high school, taking every course available. I went to college for it, spent 4 years of my life dedicating my studies to it. To come to the conclusion that if I really persude it as a career it would become a job.

What’s that you say? A career is a job? Not so, I argue back! A career is something you love to do, it brings joy to your life and a sense of accomplishment. A job is something you do because you must, it brings home a paycheque.

What makes you happy? What do you do for fun? Any of this related to what you do for work? No? Then you my friend, have a job! Keeping that in mind, the best way to go about things is to make sure you set aside time for the things you enjoy so you don’t get down in the dumps!

When you first started your job, were you relatively happy about it? Most people are! Not strange at all! Do you hate it now? Do you fantasize about ways to get out of it? For some people the only real option is a change in direction, finding new employment. I say, up your happy factor to downsize your job blues. On your day off, even if you enjoy sleeping in REALLY late, don’t! Get up and do something that will give you joy or pride outside of work!

The absolute worst thing you can do on your day off is nothing. An endless sea of nothings will only increase the ennui you get with working at your job. Even if it’s only for an hour or 30 minutes, do something that you like that will have something to show for it afterwards. You won’t regret it!
