Success Part Three: What’s Stopping You?

Most of the stuff we do in life can be split into two categories—the things we have to do and the things we want to do. For some reason, though, we seem to think that they’re vastly different from one another. We seem to think that if we do more of one, the other must suffer—that we must focus on one path or the other and that balance cannot be achieved.

This simply will not do.

What’s stopping you from doing what you want to do? Why aren’t you trying to chase your dreams and get everything you want off of this rock? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. It might seem like hot air, but I assure you that the only thing holding you back is yourself.

I have a bunch of friends who all want something out of life. We all have ideas. We all have the skills and knowledge to make something of ourselves and yet we don’t. One guy’s a financial whiz, but he can’t seem to find the time to share all of his knowledge and wisdom to improve the lives of others. I know others who’re some of the most honest and caring people I know, but they don’t yet have many skills society considers marketable to give them the exposure they need in the world. None of them have prison records, all have smarts are completely trustworthy and live on the right side of the tracks—yet they still fall in with the ebbs and flows of everyone else in the world.

But why?

What’s stopping you?

Is it self-doubt? Is it fear? Do we subconsciously put obstacles in our paths so we can see ourselves fail?

It’s one of those questions that none of us ever really have a good answer for it. Similar to “Why not?”, it’s a question of challenge, demanding that we stop and think about it, not as an obstacle to stop us from doing what we want to, but to realize that what we consider to be obstacles are often nothing more than road bumps.

Believe in anything enough, and it can be attained. We’ve conditioned ourselves to stop dreaming; stop using our imaginations—stop having any sense of vision altogether. And because we’ve closed our minds off to the realm of possibility, we start to impose this worldview upon others and their dreams.

What’s stopping us is the fact that we don’t believe in ourselves and our ideas nearly enough—we let the views of people, social norms and past experiences dictate our future, leaving us just as incapable of wonder as all the others who gave up hope.

What you need to do is remind yourself that you can do whatever you dream of—don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise. We’re all too often fuelled by envy, jealousy and bitterness, using it to bring others down with us rather than elevate those who dare to think outside of the box.

So today’s post is less of a lesson and more of a plea—if you believe in something, don’t let the dream die. Fight for it. Do whatever’s in your power to keep it alive. Make your dream a reality. Too often do we settle for “good enough” and find ourselves displeased with realities where not enough changes for the better.

Be the change. Do the work. Make the path you wish to travel in life.

And don’t let ANYBODY tell you that you can’t do it.
