Five Days of Casey Palmer

Last updated on April 23rd, 2021 at 08:30 pm

When Sarah got me doing the #100HappyDays, I thought it’d be a good exercise to teach me how to write shorter posts, giving my readers a break from the lengthy novellas I usually write. A daily picture with a short description—not that hard, right? Except that all too soon, I’d lapse back to my old habits, and contextualized them with lengthy stories instead of posting pictures that simply spoke for themselves (a thousand words and all)!

It worked well enough until I just didn’t have the energy to keep it up.

With enough real-time stuff to keep me busy (visiting my parents in Mississauga, celebrating a friend’s birthday and having company over); side projects to work on (archiving old drawings at 1200 dpi so I can resurrect my Fish ‘n’ Chimps webcomic, marathoning through Seinfeld and playing this stupid game); and of course, the stuff that pays the bills and keeps my family flourishing (spending time with Sarah and our son, writing for The Hooray Collective, PTPA and other clients, and—of course—the 9-5), the weekend got away from me, the blog posts I planned to write fleeting with it.

But stumbling blocks only last forever if you let them win, and my blog posts won’t write themselves!

Welcome back, Mr. Palmer—it’s time to get your blog on!

#100HappyDays Day 31 was a busy one, returning me downtown for some training, instantly feeling at home with its slushy sidewalks and people reminding me of the times I’d spend at the mall or wandering with friends, taking the energy of everything in. When I wasn’t dashing through the snow, I kept busy with many events—but which one made me happy?

#100HappyDays—Day 31— Pogue Mahone—Steak and Mushroom Pie

The first adventure had me wishing an old boss well, hanging with my old team at Pogue Mahone, a regular haunt for many working in Toronto’s Yonge/College area. I got my Steak and Mushroom Pie—my favourite item on their menu —and shared laughs with some of the best people I’ve worked with yet. It made me wistful for past days, and though I had a great lunch and great times, it also made me a little sad and contemplative about the future, so I don’t think this is the winner.

Candy Crush Saga: Dreamworld

#100HappyDays—Day 29—Candy Crush Saga—Dreamworld—To Be Continued Screen

It’s on the day where nothing seems to happen that we must remember that amazing things seldom happen overnight. Everything I build as a side hustle may never be perfect, but I’m all about reaching my potential with anything I’m working on.

The DC Comics Guide to Creating Comics: Inside the Art of Visual Storytelling

After clearing up what blog post goes where from yesterday’s fiasco, today was all about re-linking images to their proper posts and boning up on my foundations of creating comics to throw my hat back into that arena soon enough.

Totally helped that I’ve beaten both the Candy Crush Saga and the Dreamworld levels, though—one less set of distractions keeping me from working on all this. Sure, I could show a little more self-control, but I love accomplishing things, no matter how ludicrous—or meaningless—that accomplishment might be.

Speaking of accomplishments, I missed something on Monday, when I showed up in the 6th edition of Tania Dakka’s Monday Mosh Pit (Entrepreneur Style!) over at Badadd’D Biz+Ink, coupling my choice of Jhene Aiko’s “The Worst” with a killer description:

This next dude keeps me in stitches…he’s a riot to work with and claims he’s not a blogger, he just talks a lot. Pft. Such a poser. LOL Enjoy Casey’s track!

And say hello to Casey (word is he’s working on making you dudes be dads with cool duds, too…but that could be a rumor) and check out his #100daysofhappiness posts! (It’s kind of sickening all the happy he’s got going on…;) )

You should check it out if you’re looking for other entrepreneurs who want to get your attention!

So here’s to a day that on its own may have seemed nothing spectacular, but could very well be the beginning of many amazing things to come!

#100HappyDays—Day 28—Fish 'n' Chimps—Comic #46—Getting Ready to Come Out of the Closet
If you thought my humour was juvenile now, you should’ve seen me back in 2003!

It was my son’s 4-month “birthday” today, but I barely got to see him.

In a day preceded by three hours of sleep, fraught with everything from a site crash to slow progress with work things due to the March Break coworker exodus to the site files that refused to migrate, I came home to a kid ready to sleep from a day filled with visitors and stimuli.

My day wasn’t as exciting as his, though. It was all about:

  • Finding a hidden cache of old posts that were properly formatted, which could replace some old ones on my site that needed some touching up
  • Trying to delete the old posts, only to find that my site couldn’t handle all the load of deleting 100 posts at a time, crashing the site for a few minutes and making me finally decide to make the leap to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to handle the stress I put on my site
  • Realizing that I’d tried all this before, and the ones that were there before were the result of the very same course of actions I was trying
  • Delete these “new magical files” I came across so I never make this stupid mistake again

But though I nearly obliterated all the stuff I’d worked so hard on (again…), I was happy that my plan to reintroduce Fish ‘n’ Chimps to the world was coming together.

So what if I made them in an age where 1024 x 768 was the standard resolution, giving me comics that are way too small for the modern monitor?

So what if they show the humour of a Casey Palmer in his late teens and early twenties, utterly juvenile and devoid of a solid storyline?

So what if in 2003, I was acting like this:

It’s progress. I’ll take it.

#100HappyDays Day 28/100, parfait!

#100HappyDays—Day 27—Walmer Road Baptist Church—Goodbye, Pastor Steve!

#100HappyDays—Day 27—Walmer Road Baptist Church—Steve's Last Day (1 of 1)

It’s been just over 6 years since I started going to church again, invited by Sarah back when we started dating. It’s been a fun journey since, building a circle of trusted friends and peers I look forward to seeing every Sunday to start my week.

6 months in, they were looking for tech savvy people to try their hand at managing sound, and while daunting at first, 5½ years later, I’m one of Walmer’s three sound guys, working to bring the noise every Sunday morning while we worship.

This Sunday was especially important as we bid farewell to pastor Steve Cox who ministered at Walmer this past decade. As he resigns to a well-deserved sabbatical after our church has lost a few members due to cancer these past couple of years—including his wife, a mentor and friend to us all—we had a full stage as we sent him off in style, me doing everything I could to keep it all balanced.

A great service for a great guy—we’ll miss you, Steve—thanks for everything these past years!
