The Art of Marketing Toronto 2016 — What’s Left to Learn at The Art of Marketing?

It’s been over five years since I first hit up The Art of Marketing. My life was far different back then—with no kids, a fledgling blog, and my experience with “marketing” limited to how I saw my newfound friends carry themselves on Twitter, I was doe-eyed and utterly unaware of the depth there is to the marketing world… the people I met and the things I learned would prove formative in sharing the #BloggerLife I built for myself, with lessons that I still use today, and ones still relevant that I’ve yet to implement!

But that was five years ago.

In an industry that ages at a dog’s pace, I’ve learned many lessons since, and while I don’t hold any credentials in marketing from any post-secondary institutions (if you must know, my background’s in economics, math and stats bundled into a Business degree from York University), I know much more about the game today than I did when the decade started.

In the nearly 2000 days since my first The Art of Marketing, I’ve read a lot of books, attended a swath of conferences, and exhausted a multitude of hours going from site to site, learning how to best hone my craft. The things I learned in 2011 were good for young Casey the blogger, and got me into analyzing my traffic, refining my stories, and figuring out what I brought to the table to continue becoming a better creator—but what would I learn today?

If you haven’t figured it out by this point in the post, you’re only fooling yourself, as it’s only when we refuse to stop adapting—refuse to stop growing—that we’ve nothing left to learn, because we refuse to let ourselves.

And that, my friends, is why what there’s left to learn from The Art of Marketing is everything.

On Tuesday, June 14th, The Art of returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre once again with The Art of Marketing, a speaker series covering various aspects of the trade, with its Toronto 2016 edition headlined by Morgan Spurlock, the same man who shocked the world with his docudrama Super Size Me, illustrating the effects of fast food on our all-too-fragile human bodies. It’s the kind of series that attracts everyone from the new intern looking to wet their feet in their field to the C-suite executive, looking to the experts to keep abreast of the latest trends. It hasn’t failed me yet, and if you’re on the fence about going, I don’t think it’d fail you, either!

The Art of Marketing Conference Toronto 2015

One of the things I continue returning to each time my creative tank feels empty is The Art Of’s speaker series, sessions geared to help you hone your skills in various specialty areas, including sales, leadership and small business.

With life being as hectic as it’s been lately, I had to step away from the #BloggerLife for days — but days can become weeks, weeks become months, and months become years if you let them.

This unexpected hiatus was courtesy of many a reason — trips up to North Bay for some face time with our clients; Sarah’s birthday, Mother’s Day and our wedding anniversary to plan for; a son who makes a scene every time I break the pen and paper out because he wants to scribble, too — blogging simply ain’t as easy as it was before.

So, good thing another session’s right around the corner with The Art of Marketing at Toronto’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre on May 25th!

You may not know it, but I was a bit of a magazine junkie! Through the 2000s, I managed to collect enough of them to fill an armoire with all sorts  of glossy covers, covering everything from street art and hip-hop to men’s fashion and interior design. I’d spend time at Chapters on the way home from school to spend time leafing through the newest issues before my bus came along, invariably snagging a few to soak in through the night.

One magazine that I collected near-religiously from 2003 until almost the end of the decade was Complex — a Marc Ecko publication.

Yesterday, I mentioned dreams in my blog — we live in a world where we see them come true for people every day, so why not for us?

But they won’t often come true if we don’t prepare ourselves accordingly.

To take control of our lives, we often need to change the game. We could do as most do, find a stable path and stick to it, or we could carve something out for ourselves, choosing a path less travelled, but ultimately far more rewarding.

The Art Of Marketing Toronto 2013

What I’ve learned from the years of social media so far is that a ton of people are faking it ’til they make it, and unfortunately we eat it right up!

These days, almost everyone and their grandmother is an “expert”. The Internet’s been flooded with experts, gurus, ninjas, advocates, influencers, early adopters, grand poobahs, and whatever other titles people want to give themselves.

So after far too much time (and money) invested in everything from eBooks and videos to online courses and weekly webinars, I’ve become pretty adept at knowing the real deal when I see it.

And The Art of… learning series never disappoints.

With two of these sessions under my belt already (The Art of Marketing in 2011 and The Art of Leadership in 2012), I’ve seen some great speakers sharing their experience and insights on-stage, such as Gary Vaynerchuk, Marcus Buckingham and Guy Kawasaki. I’ve learned about what it takes to capture an audience’s attention; how to really benefit from a good analytics strategy; how to best engage with introverts (as I’m on the other end of the spectrum altogether) — I haven’t yet been able to apply everything that I’ve learned simply because there’s been so much information.

The big draw this year is Biz Stone. Yes, that Biz Stone. Yes, the co-founder of Twitter Biz Stone, headlining with a talk called Things a Little Bird Told Me: Simple Lessons About Business, Life, Service & Creativity!

The other speakers are nothing to sneeze at, either:
