The Reality of Responsibility

NOTE: While I AM on honeymoon, I didn’t get enough posts to fill the weekends, so you’ll be seeing some that I’ve been working on while abroad.

It’s quite possible that The Lonely Island is rotting my mind. When you’re playing songs like “Jack Sparrow”, “No Homo” and “Afterparty” on repeat, you really need to wonder whether the 6-year old boy within you who’s easily amused by poop jokes ever REALLY left.

But unlike that 6-year old, I’m facing the “R” word that everyone generally tries to shirk as much as possible—RESPONSIBILITY.

It creeps up on you. It finds you when you least expect it. It’s omnipresent and can really change the course of your day. Responsibility will find you eventually.

We have different responsibilities according to our different roles in life.

As a (GRAND)SON, I am responsible for…

…honouring my parents
…carrying on the family line
…taking care of whatever requests my (grand)parents may have of me—as long as they’re reasonable

As a BROTHER, I am responsible for…

…giving advice, both solicited and unsolicited
…teaching a variety of lessons about life
…setting a good example for my siblings

As a HUSBAND, I am responsible for…

…loving my wife
…taking care of my wife’s needs
…putting forward my BEST qualities in our relationship as OFTEN as possible

As a FRIEND, I am responsible for…

…being there in both rough times and good
…attending functions both lame and awesome
…supporting their ideas and dreams—unless they’re honestly really stupid

And as I’m sure you all know, these responsibilities won’t conveniently come one at a time—they overlap within roles, across roles… sometimes a single responsibility will be so vast that it will spawn new responsibilities of its own!

No, responsibility isn’t an easy thing to bear, but it is NOT to be AVOIDED. The more you delay it, the more likely it is to come back and bite you in the rear at a later time—I guarantee it.

So be responsible. Know what’s required of you and do what you have to do. Because somebody out there—in some capacity—is holding YOU accountable.

Because a boring life’s not a life worth living!
