Many parents want to give their kids the same thing—more than they ever had. But we’re doing it wrong. We’re raising a generation with more stuff than ever—more gadgets, more gizmos, more toys… all these things they likely won’t remember when they look back at things down the road.
What they will remember are their experiences.
When I started travelling on my own in my twenties, it only grew more addictive the more I did it. Backpacking through some of Western Europe made way for adventures like climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or bonding in Vegas and New Orleans with peers who were once complete strangers. It had me challenge my norms and understand the world is so much bigger than what’s in my backyard—I just hope to have the opportunity to show my sons that the world is more than a series of headlines.
But perhaps not yet.
Casey Palmer, A Dad Abroad.
I don’t know how peops like Natalie Preddie, Solmaz or Sarah Pittard do it as often as they do. The last major trip we took with our boys was semi-disastrous, testing our limits with altitudinal effects, intense heat and a mighty wallop of Montezuma’s Revenge thrown into the mix. And they were no travelling novices—in contrast to me, who didn’t take his first flight ’til 14, they’ve been to Calgary. Chicago. Cuba and more in the mere five years I’ve been a Dad. But travel bloggers like these show me it’s at least possible, and that we shouldn’t let a few challenging experiences keep us from exploring the world.
Below you can find a list of the travels I’ve taken since well before kids and beyond, looking to see as much of what’s out there as I can. As the kids grow older, we only grow bolder, and we’ll see more together as their memories form. But for now, here we are. I hope this list inspires you to make some travels of your own!
