What DID You Want to Be?

Sick, tired and slowly making headway through a heaping pile of work.

Yup, you heard me right—I’m a bit under the weather from a cold going around the office, and while I’m sitting here trying to fight it, I’m leaning (literally) on a pile of work, trying to figure out how to make it all go away.

If only it were so easy, right?

We’re all given our place in life—it’s simply up to us what we choose to do with it. For me, being a young bureaucrat by day and trying to piece my destiny together from what seems to be a million different thoughts by night, I can’t honestly say that I’ve figured out what mine is. Not yet, anyway.

I’ve been told that we should figure out what it is that we love to do and make a living from it. Great advice, but what if you’re like me, having experimented with just about every hobby under the sun?

Looking around my office, I see bits and pieces of my various forays into life. Some of these include:

  • photography
  • fine art
  • writing novels
  • web development and design
  • gaming
  • information management
  • journalism
  • drawing comics

But how do you know what really fits? Is it through trial and error? Through walking down paths in life until you can walk no more and then trying another?

While I know the answer will be different for everyone, I’m at a point where I’m not even sure if we’re equipped enough to answer these questions by our own efforts.

We can trust in the divine and pray about it, but it is said that God works in generations, not in days or weeks. We could seek the assistance of professional help, but they’re only able to give opinions and options based on what information we give them.

So again—how do we figure out what really fits?

The answer likely lies in a lot of self-reflection and unfiltered honesty. We but be able to tell ourselves whether we’re doing things that have little or no meaning to us, and if so, then we need to figure out how we can stop.

These are the thoughts that sometimes go through my head when I’m not thinking about anything else. Sometimes due to boredom. Sometimes by being spurred on by posters likes these which were plastered all over our subway system by Centennial College:

Any way I look at it, I doubt I’m figuring it out tonight, so it’s back to my toils I go, as I try to piece together the puzzle that is Casey E. Palmer.
